50DMC Day 28 – A movie you refuse to see

24 Jun

More info on The 50 Day Movie Challenge here and here.

I will not watch Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The reason is that I haven’t seen Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End yet. And I’m not planning on ever watching that either, because I found the first two films in the franchise to be surprisingly lifeless. I know the first one is certainly held in high regard by most, but I really didn’t care for it. Johnny Depp’s turn as Jack Sparrow was fun and charming for sure, but it certainly wasn’t enough to carry the rest of the film. The swashbuckling action never clicked with me, the film felt way longer than it should have been, and Orlando Bloom is the ultimate wet blanket, dragging everything down whenever he appears on screen.

I was really surprised to find myself not enjoying The Curse of the Black Pearl since there seemed to be so much love for it going around, so I figured I owed the franchise another chance. Hence why I watched Dead Man’s Chest too. Surprise, it was even worse. So no. I’m done with the franchise. Sorry, Mr. Depp. Please go back to making good movies again.

If you didn’t like Curse of the Black Pearl, you will hate the rest of the films. I think the first one’s a whole ton of fun, and I could sit through Dead Man’s Chest. At World’s End is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen – I only finished it because I was kind of fascinated to see just how bad it would get. But even then, it was never bad in a good way. I’ve got no plans to see On Stranger Tides, either.

That seems to be the general concencus on these films. People have mixed opinions on DMC, while AWE and OST seem to be disliked by everyone but the die-hard fans. Which is good, because that means I’m probably not missing out on anything essential.
