A lot of these challenges are really poorly worded. This one in particular. There are so many ways in which a movie can be said to be “disturbing”, I’m not sure what it’s really asking for. Oh well. Let’s go with the Pang brothers’ Re-Cycle. An odd Honk Kong/Thai movie that starts out as Silent Hill-esque horror only to take an eventual turn for fantasy adventure. The meshing of genres doesn’t really work that well, but I’d still call it an okay movie due to its individual parts, some of which are quite impressive.
One scene in particular really had me squirming in my seat. The heroine enters a cave or tunnel, only to discover that it’s full of aborted fetuses. And they scream like tiny babies. And the walls are dripping with blood. And as she hurriedly tries to make her way through, she accidentally steps on one and squashes it. It wasn’t scary as such, but it certainly made me really uncomfortable. Sounds like that would fit the bill for “disturbing”.
Naturally, there’s been a lot of discussions about the political symbolism involved in that scene. But politics was the last thing on my mind when I saw it. I just wished it would be over.
No way am I linking to or embedding that scene here on this blog of mine. I would be reluctant to go here myself if I did. So here’s a trailer for the film instead.
