This will be a bit of a minor cop-out, actually. There is only one film that has ever made me shed a tear, and that’s Grave of the Fireflies. However, I already used a clip of that for the favorite animated movie part of this project. So in the interest of diversity, let’s go with something else that at least made me feel a lump in my throat.
One such film is Lars and the Real Girl, a film in which the titular Lars (played flawlessly by Ryan Gosling) falls in love with a sex doll. This isn’t played for crude comedy. Rather, it’s a delusion that springs from his social anxieties and his upbringing. Throughout the film, the rest of the townsfolk play along to help Lars get through whatever it is he’s going through. All the time, completely selflessly. Watching this film, it always strikes me how rare it is for unconditional kindness like this to be portrayed so earnestly in movies. It’s very moving. Combine that with Gosling’s performance that perfectly shows all the stress and discomfort he’s going through, and it all leads up to a wonderful climax where… Well. Go watch the film. I’m almost getting a little choked up just thinking about the beauty of it all.
The clip below is from the early parts of the film and contains no spoilers, by the way. It’s also more likely to make you laugh than cry.
